Neil C. Thompson
Neil Thompson played many sports well, but his greatest achievements were in softball and basketball. He was a team player in every sense of the word, always putting the good of the team ahead of personal goals.
Born in Peterborough, Neil was intensely competitive but always sportsmanlike. He was a quiet, natural leader who played on Ontario championship teams in both sports. In basketball, he played for PCVS teams that were Kawartha and Lakeshore champions from 1946 to 1951; these teams won COSSA titles in 1948 and 1949, the latter year also taking Ontario and Canadian juvenile honours. Neil was captain of the 1963 Ontario Intermediate B champions and his playmaking was an integral force in the win.
Thompson played City League softball from 1950 to 1966 and was on three league titlists. The 1959 Lakefield team earned Ontario Int. A honours. An exciting player to watch at shortstop, Neil was regarded as one of the finest all-round players of his era. He was named MVP in 1952, and 1961, and voted Most Gentlemanly Player in 1964. Truly, a class athlete.
