Robert (Honey) Tompkins

Robert (Honey) Tompkins

Robert (Honey) Tompkins was born at Deseronto, ON and moved here in 1937 at the age of 19. He played outstanding hockey at all levels, starting in junior at Napanee, then a year at Belleville before being recruited to play here.

In the ensuing period up to 1951, Honey won scoring honours eight times. Initially, he was a right winger but later moved back to defence.  He had offers to turn pro but would not leave the job security here. Because of his age, in his early years he often played at all three levels, – junior, intermediate and senior – in the same season. Honey later coached minor clubs, remaining active until his death in 1964.

Among numerous honours, Tompkins was named Kingston Jr. MVP in 1934-35, at age 15; OHA MVP with Peterborough, 1938-39; played with the 1937 Int. B winners at Belleville; with the 1940 Int. A winners at Peterborough; and the 1942 Peterborough Sr. B titlists.

Honey also played lacrosse and softball. He died in 1964.
