Margaret (O’Donohue) Baker
Margaret Baker was the first city player to win a Central Ontario women’s singles title, and she dominated badminton in Peterborough and District for more than 2 decades, playing competitively from 1935 to 1965. She was a runner-up in women’s doubles in 1965.
She was a 10-time winner in Central Ontario Badminton League doubles against competition from Belleville, Oshawa, Lindsay and all points in between. She also picked up 2 singles titles and one in mixed doubles along the way. With her husband, she also won several club mixed doubles championships and numerous club singles crowns.
Margaret was also widely known for her contribution to the game’s youngsters–more than 100 learned their basics from her teachings at the Market Hall location, under the town clock.
She also played with the Peterborough Military Badminton Club at the Armouries on Murray Street until forced to vacate due to World War II. She died in 2006.
