Donald A. McGillis, Sr.

Donald A. McGillis, Sr.

Donald A. McGillis, Sr., had a great love of sports, particularly hockey and football. Born in Glengarry County, ON, in 1887, he lived many years in Winnipeg before coming to this city in 1943. And over the next almost two decades, Don McGillis was one of the prime sponsors of athletic teams in Peterborough.

Known as the owner of the McGillis Hotel, Don sponsored teams at all levels but is particularly remembered for backing the Eagles, a Sr. B team of note, and fans often recall the great rivalry between the Eagles and Petes of the 1940s.

As a fan of football, too, he was an executive member of the Peterborough Orfuns for several seasons and was named Honorary President in 1952 when that club won the Eastern Canada Championship. McGillis always had a helping hand, whether for the use of autos to carry players, or supporting teams of youngsters in the sport embryo stages.

Many youngsters became involved in sport because of Don McGillis’ generosity. He died in 1961.
