S. A. (Stan) McBride, Sr.
Stan McBride, Sr. has made countless contributions to the City of Peterborough, not the least of which was serving as both Mayor and Sheriff. He utilized his immense wit and humour to emcee numerous public affairs and community-oriented functions.
Stan was a stand-out in many endeavours, his barrel-chested physique propelled him to stardom in what was probably his first love – sport. As a youth, he played them all – hockey, track and field, swimming, softball and baseball for starters. He set records wherever he competed in swimming and diving, and broke all YMCA records in backstroke and freestyle swimming. He won the Wallace Point Mile swim in its first two years. During World War II, he won high aggregate in eight events at Camp Borden Military Base.
In weightlifting, McBride won the Outboard Marine Trophy, heavyweight division. He also helped start lifting at the Y and assisted by teaching.
If a “Mr. Peterborough” was being selected, Stan would be a leading candidate. He died in 2005.
