Edward (Eddie) Redmond
Eddie Redmond was born in Cobalt, Ontario in 1923. Along with his wife May and sons Mick and Dick, he moved to Peterborough in 1953 to become the playing coach for the Senior Petes Hockey Club. This was on the heels of a 7 year professional career that included stops in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Fresno, Milwaukee and a stint in the Quebec Hockey League. He amalgamated the arch rivals Petes and Eagles into one senior team. With the decline of senior hockey and the arrival of a Junior A franchise, the club was disbanded in 1955. Also in 1953, he commenced work with the Toronto Peterborough Transport company which would become the major sponsor of the T.P.T. Junior A Hockey Club. In 1955 Wren Blair would convince Eddie and goalie Jack Donlevy to play senior hockey for the Whitby Dunlops. The Dunlops won 2 Allan Cup Canadian Senior A Hockey Championships and the 1958 World Hockey Championship in Oslo, Norway. Ed was the team captain and assistant coach. A talented athlete, he played senior baseball in the E.O.B.A. and softball in the City Men’s Softball League. After retiring as a player, Ed would spend the remainder of his life volunteering his time as a coach and manager of local hockey and lacrosse teams. He was the manager of the 1959 Mann Cup finalists Peterborough Mercury’s lacrosse team. In 1968 he was asked to become an executive member of the Peterborough Petes Hockey Club and went on to become the club’s President. He served for over 20 years with the Petes and saw them compete in two World Championships and win the Memorial Cup in 1979. Eddie was always available to share his knowledge and his passion for all sports in the Peterborough area. Ed and May were avid promoters of the Petes from their perch in Section 3 at the Memorial Centre and very outspoken supporters of their adopted city. Eddie joins his sons, Mick and Dick as honoured members of the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame.
