Bert McLeod

Born in Collingwood, Bert McLeod was a talented all-round high school athlete. He played on the Collingwood Junior OHA team and was a key defenseman with the Intermediate team winning three championships 1918-1919-1920. He is an inductee of the Collingwood Sports Hall of Fame. Bert moved to Peterborough in 1924 after hockey seasons with the Welland Intermediates and the Toronto Varsity Seniors. His first practice here was on the canal by the Lift Lock. He played three seasons in Peterborough and was a standout defenseman on the 1926 team that won the OHA provincial championship. In 1927 Bert turned pro with the Kansas City Pla-Mors of the American Hockey Association, winning two championships in 1930 and 1933 and reaching the AHA finals in 1931. He ended his pro career in 1934 with the Philadelphia Arrows of the Canada-American Hockey League.  For seven seasons Bert would leave Peterborough and his pharmacy business to travel to the USA to play hockey.  The community was happy to have Bert return to Peterborough where his pharmacy McLeod’s Drug Store was a fixture at the corner of Park and Albert for many years.  He was a well-known, highly respected businessman.  Locals claim he served the best ice cream cones in the city.
