Donald Sherry
From the moment he arrived in Peterborough in 1959, Don Sherry immersed himself into the sporting community. Over the span of nearly fifty years Don was involved in many organizations. He umpired all levels of fastball/softball and slo-pitch – women’s, men’s, senior’s, OASA and PWSA in Peterborough and surrounding district. During this time he took on many roles within the umpire association – president, executive member and scheduler. He was one of the organizers of the Peterborough Umpire’s Association and helped in the merger with the Kawartha Umpire’s Association to create one organization. From its formation in 1991, Don was an integral part of the growth and development of the Peterborough Men’s Senior Slo-Pitch League. He served 11 years on the Executive and played an active role in its operation, from organizing social functions to umpiring and playing. Don was also one of the original organizers of the Peterborough Senior’s Hockey Club. A public school teacher, Don also gave of his time to coaching school teams as well as coaching Church League hockey and softball. He was a player/coach/manager for St. Barnabas in the Men’s Church Slo-Pitch League where he also served as the league’s umpire liaison. He volunteered for the Lift Lock Atom Tournament for many years. Don was a pretty good hockey player as well, playing with the teachers in Keene, Friday night recreational, and the Peterborough Seniors Hockey Club, as well as the Old Stock team. Don Sherry will certainly be remembered for his involvement and commitment to the sporting community, but most people will remember him as a highly respected umpire who was fair and always professional.
