C. J. (Cliff) Cadd
Versatility was the trademark of Cliff Cadd, a true all-round athlete who was a standout in many sports.
Volleyball was probably his finest, but many felt he was equally as good at baseball. Cliff took up volleyball in 1935 and for more than a decade was regarded as one of the top spikers in Canada, playing for championship teams in 1944 and 1945. In baseball, he was a member of the Ontario bantam championship club of 1929. He played first base on senior clubs of renown, the 1938 team reaching the Ontario finals.
As a basketball player, Cadd was All-City in 1931, 1932 and 1933. He also starred on the first Peterborough box lacrosse team that went to Ontario finals. Cliff played City League softball, football and Jr. A hockey in the 1930s.
“I played sports 12 months of the year,” recalls Cliff, “and enjoyed it a great deal.” So did the fans who watched him excel over the years. He died in 2009.
