Hall of Fame Bursaries Presented to 2024 Recipients
It was a night to celebrate the achievements of 4 local student-athletes! In front of family, friends and teammates FINN HUGHES, AVA JOHNSON, BRYNN THOMPSON JENKINS and IRELAND PAYNE each received a $2000 bursary courtesy of the Hall of Fame. The money is to be used to finance their post secondary pursuits. These bursaries are funded by our annual “Jack’s Golf Tournament” held in May.
Let’s introduce each of our bursary winners:
Finn Hughes is a graduate of Holy Cross and will be attending Laurier University studying Business Administration and will be playing rugby for the Golden Hawks. He is an honours student with a 90% average.
Finn played football, basketball and rugby for the Canes and was captain of all teams. He was named senior athlete of the year and earned many MVP awards as well as being a member of the schools student council.
In the community he was a member of the U18 team Canada rugby program, the U19 team Ontario rugby, Peterborough Pagans, Petes minor hockey and Otters football.
As a volunteer Finn was a link leader at Holy Cross, he volunteered with special needs students, was an OFSAA lacrosse volunteer, and gave back to minor hockey as a referee and scorer/timer.
Brynn Thompson Jenkins is a graduate of Crestwood SS. She will be attending Queens’ University studying Health Sciences and will be playing varsity rugby. She is an honours student with a 94% average.
At Crestwood she played rugby, basketball volleyball, track and field and wrestling – was captain of the rugby team, she earned an OFSAA gold medal in wrestling as well as competing at OFSAA in Track and field for 4 years. She earned MVP honours in rugby, and for these efforts she earned the Dysart award – one of the highest athletic honours at Crestwood.
In the community Brynn was a member of the Peterborough Pagans rugby club, she played Kawartha lacrosse, soccer, and she has attended the Rugby Canada development academy.
Beyond the athletic fields, Brynn gave back through her volunteer work. She has worked with Kawartha Food Share, has been a referee for junior rugby, coach with mini rugby, and has been a black athlete advocate on social media.
Ava Johnston is a graduate of Adam Scott Collegiate. She will be attending the University of Guelph-studying Health Sciences playing rugby for the Gryphons. She is an honours student with a 96% average.
Ava played high school rugby, volleyball, wrestling, ultimate frisbee. She was captain of many of these teams leading them to OFSAA gold medals in Ultimate and Kawartha and COSSA championships in Rugby and volleyball. She was Adam Scott’s senior female athlete of the year and earned many MVP awards.
In the community she played hockey for the Ice Kats, is a member of the Peterborough Pagans rugby club and has been a member of the Ontario rugby program.
Off the field Ava was a Sunday school volunteer, assisted with the Million Meals program, and was an active volunteer / referee at the KPR elementary rugby and ultimate tournaments.
Ireland Payne is a graduate of Thomas A Stewart. She will be attending the University of New Brunswick studying Environmental Management and playing volleyball. She is an honours student with 94% average.
Ireland played high school basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, soccer and track and field. She earned multiple MVP awards in her sports at TAS.
In the community she played Peterborough Thunder volleyball and soul beach volleyball and was a member of the Peterborough Badminton Club.
Ireland’s volunteer work had her spending time working with Kawartha Food Share, the Peterborough Humane Society, as well as volunteering at many KPR elementary sporting events.
