William (Clair) Leahy

William (Clair) Leahy

Clair Leahy’s record as a softball pitcher, organizer and coach is outstanding; he also authored a well-used softball reference entitled: The Windmill Pitch.

Clair spread his exceptional pitching talents over 30 years from the City League to Kawartha, Otonabee, Lakefield, Ennismore and Industrial levels. And he won a clutch of awards, including: Mr. Softball 1985, Civic Sports 1989, Contribution to Minor Softball 1991; Sports Person of the Year 1993; City League Top Pitcher 1974; Eastern Ontario League Top Pitcher 1977; plus MVP honours in 1977 (Ontario finals) and 1981 (Challenge Cup).

Teams won titles with Clair on the mound, most notable of which was an Ontario Championship with Peterborough Teachers in 1977. He also played on an Ontario Basketball titlist with Fitzgerald Oilers in 1963. As a youth, Clair dominated running events from the 100-yard dash to the one-mile run. For many years, he unselfishly donated his teaching skills to free clinics. Leahy is a remarkable athlete.
