William (Bill) Twist

Born in Lakefield, Bill played ball and hockey.  He played Junior “B” hockey with Peterborough and was a call-up to the McGillis Eagles for their Senior “B” playoffs in 1952.  He also played for the Senior “B” Petes.  In 1955 Bill was part of the Lakefield team that won the OHA Intermediate “A” Lakeshore League Championship.  In 1963, he won an OASA Industrial League Intermediate “A” Eastern Ontario Championship. Bill turned his talents to coaching hockey.  During the 1960’s and 70’s, Twist-coached teams excelled.  His All Saints Midgets won the PCCHL Championship in 1962 and 1963; the Midget All-Stars won the OMHA Eastern Ontario Championship in 1963; the All Saints Juveniles won the PCCHL title in 1965 while the Juvenile All-Stars won the OMHA “A”, “AAA” and OHA Championships in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

Bill coached the Peterborough Junior “B” Lions to Gold Medals in the 1970 Ontario Winter Games and 1971 Canada Games and were OHA Eastern Ontario Junior “B” Champions.   From 1978 through 1981 Bill’s OMHA Bantam, Midget and Juvenile teams were Eastern Ontario Division Finalists.

From 1960 to 1977, Bill filled various Peterborough Community Church Hockey League roles.  He served seven terms as Chairman and was a 15 year Atom Tournament volunteer. His long term commitment to the local sport community earned him respect from his peers and gratitude from the hundreds of players who passed through the PCCHL.

Bill was inducted into the Peterborough Pathway of Fame in 2009 in recognition for his contribution to the Lakefield Christ Church restoration.  He passed away in 2006.
