Wilfred (Biffer) Ranger
Born in 1902, Biffer Ranger played lacrosse and baseball on Peterborough teams but it was in the ice game where he left his lasting mark. He played baseball for the CGE, where he learned the toolmaking trade, and lacrosse for South End teams. He played junior and intermediate OHA hockey for this city, then went into OHA Senior in 1925 on a team with Irvin (Ace) Bailey, Frank Collins and Bert McLeod; that team won the Ontario SPA Cup.
Ranger turned professional in hockey in the 1927-28 season and was a member of the Kansas City Playmores for five seasons in the American Association, a league just one short level below the NHL. He then went to Cleveland for a season, broke his ankle the next year in a tryout with Montreal Canadiens, and went to their farm team in Providence, RI. His last season was with Wichita of the American Hockey League and he retired from pro ranks at age 38 to take permanent employment in Detroit. He died in 1986.
