Roy Henderson
Roy Henderson has certainly left his mark on the Peterborough area sports scene with his achievements in wheelchair basketball.
In the early 1980’s he began playing wheelchair basketball in Peterborough and then moved on to play with teams in Toronto, Kitchener, Ottawa, Hamilton and Scarborough, as well as the Ontario Provincial Team and Canadian Team.
On the international scene, Roy participated in 5 Olympic/Paralympic Games between 1988 and 2004 winning gold medals in both 2000 and 2004. He also participated in 4 Gold Cup World Championships between 1990 and 2002, winning 4 bronze medals.
In 2004 Roy’s Canadian Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team won the Canadian Sports Award and received the honour of ‘Team of the Year’.
During his illustrious career, Roy won 10 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 1 bronze medal with the Ontario Wheelchair Basketball Team at the National Championships between 1987 and 2004. He was selected 5 times to the Canadian All-Star Team.
He has worked at Home Depot since 2000 and was a member of the Home Depot Olympic/Paralympic Athlete program between 2002 and 2005, which offers a flexible 20 hour work week with full-time pay and benefits to accommodate demanding training and competition schedules. Roy is now full-time at Home Depot, Peterborough.
Roy’s induction into the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame will stand as a lasting tribute to his character and perseverance as an athlete.
