G. Roy (Army) Armstrong
Born in Saltscoats, Saskatchewan, Roy Armstrong was a talented athlete who had success in many sports – football, hockey, swimming, basketball, softball, skiing and running. Roy was a champion swimmer; he played softball for Central School – 1946 City champions; and the Church League bantams and midgets from 1946-48. He won an Eastern Ontario Championship with the Peterborough Juvenile hockey team in 1949-50. He had a tryout with the Cleveland Barons Junior hockey team. In 1952 he played for the McGillis Eagles hockey team, the Senior Petes from 1953-55 and Outboard Marine in 1957 and 58. He was on the PCVS COSSA senior finalist basketball team in 1950. Roy also contributed his time to coaching Church League Hockey.
Roy was an outstanding football player winning COSSA with PCVS juniors in 1949 and the senior team COSSA finalists in 1950. He was the leading scorer of the Peterborough Orfuns Football Club who were the Canadian finalists in 1952 and 1954. He won Ontario Football Championships in 1952,53,54 and 55 and was a member of the Orfuns Dominion Football Champions in 1955.
Before leaving Peterborough in 1988, Roy competed in downhill skiing and the Canadian Masters in running. He ran in the Ottawa, Toronto, Boston, New York City and Rhode Island Marathons. Since then, he has competed in kayaking and the USA Senior Olympics in running and shuffleboard.
Roy was a good all-round athlete who achieved success throughout his lifetime in sports.
