Ron Horton

Ron Horton was a gifted local athlete who excelled in both hockey and lacrosse.

Ron played hockey in 1939 for the Peterborough Petes Juniors and for the Owen Sound Greys in 1940. He finished his Junior career with Kingston in the 1942-43 season where he led the team to the Ontario Finals against the University of Toronto Blues at Maple Leaf Gardens. He spent the 1946-47 season with the Peterborough Legion Intermediate Club finishing second in the team scoring with 23 goals and 11 assists. In 1947-48 Ron joined the Senior Peterborough Petes where he continued to play until his retirement in the early 1950s.

Ron’s athletic prowess also included the game of lacrosse. In 1941 he played Junior Lacrosse in Brooklin, ON. He then joined the Peterborough Senior Lacrosse Club, playing for many seasons at Miller Bowl, winning Ontario Senior B Championships in 1947 and 1948.

Following his playing career, Ron coached the Peterborough Church League All-Stars to the Ontario Bantam A Hockey Championship in 1957-58. His Junior B Petes Hockey Club won league championships in 1959 and 1960. In the mid 1950s Ron coached the Hiawatha Braves to the East Peterborough League Championship.

Ron’s induction into the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame is a fine testimonial to a great playing and coaching career. He died in 2009.
