R. Ann (Hillier) Lang
Sport was a way of life for Ann Lang, a Toronto native who moved here at age seven, she very quickly developed her athletic skills, particularly in softball, basketball and hockey. She honed her skills through the City Parks programs and during her high school days at PCVS.
In basketball, Ann earned scoring titles and All-Star honours wherever she played. She was a member of several city and provincial championship clubs, including the team which earned Provincial Intermediate B honours in 1963 and Senior A honours with the Keith Brown Jetettes in 1968. The team earned a trip to the 1968 Canadian Basketball Championships in Saskatchewan. Ann played two seasons of Sr. A basketball in Hamilton, commuting twice a week in order to play senior basketball. She was selected to the All-Ontario All-Star team which competed in the first Canadian Winter Games in 1967 at Quebec City. The team won a silver medal.
Ann put together a softball team which won five straight city championships and two Ontario titles in the 1960s. Later, she played for a Lakefield team that won three Ontario Intermediate and one Senior PWSA Championship. She was considered one of the best catchers in the province during her playing days. She was also a pioneer of women’s hockey and was cited by both the City and the Provincial Women’s Softball Association for her contribution to women’s sport.
