Louis (Lou) Nickle
Lou came to Peterborough to play junior lacrosse in 1951. Invited as a replacement player after his team was eliminated, Lou led Mimico to the Canadian Championship, the Minto Cup.
The next season Lou joined Peterborough’s senior team, the Timbermen, and helped them to three Canadian Championships in succession. In 1952, playing Vancouver in Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens, the Timbermen won the Mann Cup in four straight games. Lou was honoured with the Mike Kelly award as the Most Valuable Player of the series. During the next five years, Lou led Peterborough to the Eastern Canadian Championship four times in 1955,56,57 and in 1959. A final Mann Cup Championship came with Port Credit in 1960. Lou’s final contribution to the sport was as a referee for the Ontario Lacrosse Association.
An all-round athlete, Lou excelled at football with the Peterborough Orfuns from 1952 to 1957. The Orfuns were Ontario Rugby Football Union Intermediate Champions from 1952 to 1955. In 1955 the Orfuns also won the Canadian Intermediate Football Championship.
In November of 1994, Lou was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in New Westminster, BC. He died in 2004.
