Ken Self
Peterborough native Ken Self has worked tirelessly on behalf of minor hockey in Peterborough for more than four decades.
As coach, manager, tournament organizer and league administrator, Ken has shown selfless dedication to generations of youngsters and his efforts have been recognized both locally and nationally. In 1965 he was named Peterborough Sportsman of the Year and he also received a Canadian Amateur Hockey Association Certificate of Merit the same year.
He received the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League Appreciation Award for 1959, a Civic Award from the City in 1969 and a Peterborough Recreation Committee certificate for dedication to minor hockey in 1995.
Ken started coaching and managing in 1955 with a St. James team in the Church League. He served as Vice-President, President and Publicity Director for the league between 1958 and 1969, a period when the league expanded dramatically.
For three years he was manager of the City’s Peewee All-Star team that competed at the National Tournament in Goderich and later served two years as manager of the 428 Wing Juveniles. From 1962 to 1971, he organized the Young Canada Day Hockey Tournament in Peterborough.
For many years Ken was the PCCHL contact man arranging the playoff schedule with OMHA all-star teams throughout the province.
An avid golfer, Ken was also involved with the Junior Golf Program at the Kawartha Golf & Country Club. He died in 2013.
