Monty began his junior career with the Lakefield Legionnaires in 1946. In the 1947 season he played with the Peterborough Junior B Oddfellows and in the 1948-49 season he divided his time playing Junior A hockey with Oshawa Generals and the Guleph Biltmores.

From 1949 to 1955 Monty played Senior B hockey with the Peterborough Legion, McGillis Eagles and the T.P.T. Petes. During this time period he was twice runner-up for the Jimmy Drummond Memorial Trophy awarded each season to the most valuable player in Peterborough. In 1955-56 he was an all-star defenceman and team MVP in Intermediate A hockey with Lakefield’s Kingdon Lumber, Lakeshore League Champions.
