John James “Jack/Hay” Millar

John James “Jack/Hay” Millar

Born in Keene in 1883, Jack Millar played in the OHA with Norwood from 1900 to 1915 with two seasons in the professional ranks – Edmonton in 1908 and the Renfrew Creamery Kings of the National Hockey Association (dubbed the Millionaires) in the 1909-1910 season. He played on the 1908 Edmonton Pros, Alberta Professional Hockey League Championship team that challenged the Montreal Wanderers for the Stanley Cup. The “ramped up” team included “an all-time high for ringers” with Peterborough’s Fred Whitcroft being the only regular season player. They lost to Montreal 13-10 in a two game total points series, but Whitcroft, Lester Patrick (Peterborough’s Bill Crowley Sr.’s replacement), Didier Petre, Tom Phillips and Harold McNamara (Millar’s replacement) all eventually were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. After a season in Renfrew Jack returned to Alberta to play for the Stettler Hockey Club. He died in July of 1944.
