Jim Fife
Jim Fife was a good all round athlete growing up in Norwood. He played hockey, softball, football and basketball, winning a 1962 COSSA Junior B Basketball Championship, scoring a record 34 points in a single game. He was an OMHA Bantam D and Midget D finalist in 1958 and 1960 and was invited to the Toronto Marlboro training camp in 1961. His Norwood team won the 1962 OASA Juvenile C zone and 1963 OASA Juvenile C Champions. In 1963, this young pitching star moved up to the Peterborough Men’s City Softball League and won “Rookie of the Year” and lead the Steelworkers to the City League Championship. From 1963 to 1969 he was one of the league’s elite pitchers, winning three City League Championships; 1963 OASA Industrial southern Ontario finalists; a 1967 OASA Intermediate Provincial Championship; was league MVP in 1967; and managed Peterborough Heating to the 1968 OASA Junior A Provincial title. During his stellar career, Jim pitched in some big games and can count two perfect games and two one hit games among the highlights of his outstanding career. Jim was also a high scoring player in the Industrial Hockey League. Along with his many accomplishments as a player, Jim was the coach of the 1961-62 Eastern Ontario Baseball Pee-Wee D Champions; coach of the 1962-63 Norwood OMHA Pee Wee Eastern Ontario Champions; President of East Peterborough Minor Softball League; and President of the Hastings Civic Softball League. Jim’s dedication to sports and the contribution he has made as a coach and organizer of youth sports was recognized when awarded the Norwood Legion “Sportsman of the Year” in 1970. Jim Fife can be considered among the very best to have ever pitched in the Peterborough Men’s City Softball League.
