George (Junior) Ellis

George Ellis is recognized as the man most responsible for keeping senior baseball alive in Peterborough from 1975 to 2000. George enters his 25th campaign as Manager of the Peterborough Tigers in 2000 and has been connected with local baseball for more than 30 years. For 12 years he coordinated the successful Tigers baseball camp for youngsters.

His contribution in providing local baseball players with the opportunity to play at a highly competitive level with a Peterborough team was recognized in 1982 when he was named Sportsman of the Year by the city.

A fixture on many local sporting scenes, George has a long-time career as an official, refereeing high school football for 35 years. He has coached minor hockey teams in the Peterborough Minor Hockey Association and Peterborough Community Church Hockey League and managed a local midget all-star hockey team. He was also a member of the executive of the Peterborough Junior “B” Lions Hockey Team in the 1970s.

George’s keen interest in hockey was evident by his playing Oldtimers Hockey with the Peterborough Relics for 21 consecutive years.

Born in Peterborough in 1937, George has made a lasting contribution as a builder to the sports heritage of his community.
