Gary H. Darling

Gary Darling had a long and distinguished career in hockey as a player, coach, scout and NHL team executive.

Although small of stature, he was a high-scoring star with a Warsaw team which won an OMHA championship, later excelling with Peterborough Shamrocks when they won OMHA All-Ontario bantam honours in 1953. Gary played Jr. B and two years of Jr. A hockey here, a fine two-way centre with the Petes’ club that went to the Memorial Cup final in 1959.

Darling played Sr. A hockey in Whitby and coached Peterborough Jr. B’s several seasons. He became a scout for St. Louis Blues and later chief scout for Boston Bruins of the NHL. After 10 years with Boston, Gary moved to Philadelphia Flyers to become Assistant General Manager, where he served until health problems forced his retirement.

Gary Darling was also a prominent pepper-pot catcher for several years in City League softball. He died in 2008.
