Edward E. (Eddie) Murphy
Edward E. Murphy was in the vanguard of outstanding athletes who came to Peterborough in the 1930s. A Toronto native, Eddie was a perennial all-star shortstop, good enough to be scouted by major league teams. He also excelled in football, playing for the 1932 St. Michael’s team that won the Ontario title, and for the 1934 Argonauts’ Juniors which shared the Canadian Championship.
He came here in 1935, playing for both the senior baseball club and for the football Orfuns where he played quarterback and defensive end. The next two seasons, Eddie played pro but regained amateur status in 1938 and was invited back to this city as player/coach, a position he enjoyed until 1950, with time out for service in the RCAF during World War II.
Murphy took Peterborough senior teams to Ontario finals three times and picked up the OBA Senior crown in 1977. He was also instrumental in bringing about installation of lights at Riverside Park, and was regarded by many as the finest shortstop to ever play here. He died in 1999.
