Donald Gray
Don Gray demonstrated the classic spirit of the volunteer in sports in Peterborough, working tirelessly for more than 20 years to give youngsters the opportunity to play softball and hockey.
Don did not seek the spotlight while promoting participation, fair play and sportsmanship for generations of boys and girls. Don did it all, from coaching, refereeing and umpiring, to recruiting umpires and coaches, lining fields and timekeeping. For many years, he was a top administrator in local hockey, minor softball and men’s softball.
From 1952 to 1968, Don was President of the Peterborough Community Church Softball League where he also coached and umpired. As President, Don initiated the first girl’s division in the Church League. A trophy bearing his name was awarded for years to the girl’s championship team. He was also on the executive of the City Minor Softball League and a member of the executive of the Peterborough Men’s Softball Association for many years.
From 1948 1966, Don was heavily involved in minor hockey in Peterborough in both the Peterborough Community Church League and the Peterborough Minor Hockey Association. Don was a member of the executive in both leagues as well as a coach, referee and game official.
