Don Crowe

Don Crowe was a most versatile athlete. As a Toronto teenager he won provincial titles in lacrosse and softball, was a star football player at Danforth Tech. and played Junior B hockey with Toronto Marlboros.

Moving to Peterborough in 1937, he starred in football, lacrosse, hockey, softball and basketball.

Don was a skilled and rugged defenceman with the 1937 Peterborough Petes Junior Hockey Club, OHA finalists. In 1939-40 his Peterborough team won the Ontario and Eastern Canada Intermediate A titles. In 1941-42 he was a member of the local Army team which won the OHA Senior B Crown.

Don played for Peterborough’s 1938 Canadian Lacrosse Association Senior B champions. Following 5 years of wartime service as an RCAF pilot, he returned to coach the 1951 Peterborough Timbermen to the Mann Cup title.

During 1938 and 1939 Don starred for the Peterborough Orfuns Football Club. In 1940 he played for Balmy Beach, ORFU champions and Grey Cup finalists. Don was named to the 1940 Senior ORFU All-Star Team. In 1942 he co-captained the RCAF Hurricanes to the Grey Cup title and was selected All-Canadian. In 1948 Don was a member of the Toronto Argonauts. His final Grey Cup victory came in 1951 with the Ottawa Rough Riders.

Don’s induction into the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame is a fitting memorial to an outstanding athlete.
