Darl Sutherland

Darl Sutherland

Growing up in Bancroft, Darl ran some cross-country in school with little success.  Success would come for him when he attended Sir Sandford Fleming College. With the encouragement of the late Dave McConkey and the Peterborough running community, Sutherland began to flourish.  Between 2001 and 2005 he won one individual and two team Ontario College Athletic Association cross-country gold medals and two individual and two team silver medals.  He was an individual bronze medal winner at the CCAA Championships in 2002 and 2004, with Fleming College winning a silver team medal in 2004. He captained the OCAA team representing Ontario at CCAA Championships in 2004 and 2005, winning silver and bronze medals.  He was a key factor in the Fleming Knights team success winning two gold and two silver medals in four years and crowned overall OCAA Champions in 2001-02. He was a two-time All-CCAA team member.  Darl was inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2013.  As a marathon runner, Darl Sutherland was nationally ranked for several years in the top 20 in the 5k, 10k, ½ marathon, full marathon and ultra marathon.  He competed in the Boston, Philadelphia and New York marathons and won the 2006 Mississauga, 2007 Prince Edward County, 2009 Comrades Ultra, South Africa and 2012 Amherstburg marathons.  During his career, Darl has won over 130 races.  His love of running translated into an impressive 20-year coaching career.  Darl Sutherland is a Level 3 Certified Endurance Coach with certification in all aspects of training high performance athletes.  He has coached several individual athletes and teams to national, provincial and OFSAA championships. He has coached the SSFC Cross-Country and Track teams since 2011 as well as high school track and field and Special Olympics. Darl Sutherland has made a tremendous impact on the Peterborough running community. To quote one of his many supporters “through all his greatness, achievements and success, Darl inspires others to be their best.  He is a positive influence on others.  He was an amazing athlete who became an amazing coach.”
