Cheryl Coombes
Cheryl Coombes was a multi-talented athlete who excelled at a number of sports, including golf, hockey, softball, basketball, lacrosse, football and volleyball. She won championships at the local, regional and provincial levels and has received MVP awards in several sports on numerous occasions.
In golf, Cheryl has won many titles. Highlights include: three time City Junior Championships: Peterborough District Ladies Championship three consecutive years from 1984 through 1986; and also in 1986 along with the District Championship, the Kawartha and Tamarac Invitationals and the Peterborough Golf & CC Ladies Championship.
Cheryl starred on three Provincial hockey championship teams as a leading scorer, and she also skated with the Olympic team for exhibition play in 1998. Other provincial championship teams include lacrosse, slo-pitch and football. In basketball she was a member of championship teams at Kenner Collegiate, SSFC and Peterborough City League.
She was recognized as Peterborough’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 1979 and 1986. Cheryl received Civic Awards in 1978 and 1993, and a Federal Government Celebration ’88 medal for her outstanding contributions to community amateur sports. In 1992, she was inducted into the first Kenner Collegiate “Wall of Fame.”
This all-round athlete also served as President of the Peterborough Girls Hockey Association and was an Executive committee member for eleven years.
With her induction, Cheryl joins her father, Cyril Coombes, as the first father-daughter combination in the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame.
