C. M. (Cy) Coombes

Cyril M. (Cy) Coombes has a remarkable lacrosse record, both as a player and as a coach. Known for his speed and scoring ability on breakaways, Cy had a 15-year senior and pro career. His 1,062 goals and 612 assists for 1,674 points, including playoffs, placed him atop the OLA all-time scorer’s list. In 1969, he hit for a Sr. A/Major Series schedule record of 113 goals.

Over a 10-year span, Cy finished nine times among the top 10 in Sr. OLA scoring. He played on two Mann Cup championship teams — Peterborough Lakers in 1966 and 1973 — and coached in 1982 Mann Cup winners. He also coached the Minto Cup (junior) Canadian champions at Hastings in 1961, Cup runners-up in 1962, and Mann Cup finalists in 1983. His coaching covered the full latitude from bantam to pro, plus many years of conducting clinics. Cy Coombes’ record speaks for itself.

He was also an adept hockey player and was a member of the 1953 Ontario champion Bantam A Shamrocks. Cy was elected to the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1985. He died in 1999.
