George I. Dormer
Known as “The Little Iron Man,” George Dormer had an active career as a softball player, manager and sponsor with a lifetime involvement at the executive level of sport in our City.
Born in 1903, George became proprietor of a George Street sports hangout known as the Sugar Bowl. This lunch counter and confectionery store, located near the YMCA, was a favourite meeting place for the city’s sports crowd.
George was active in softball, baseball and hockey but softball was his first love in sport. His “Sugar Bowl” teams won four consecutive Men’s City League titles, starting in 1930. The Sugar Bowl Trophy, emblematic of the Men’s City League Champions, was donated by George in 1945 and retired in 1964.
George served on the executive board of the Men’s City Softball League for many years and in 1957 became President of this league.
In recognition of his meritorious contributions to softball, the George Dormer Memorial Trophy is presented annually to be Men’s City League Champions.
George died in 1962.
