Don Barrie Receives the Rotary “Paul Harris Fellow Award” for his extensive work with youth
Don Barrie was recognized by the Rotary Club of Peterborough as a 2024 Paul Harris Fellow Award recipient. As past chairman of the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame, longtime Board member, inductee (1988) and weekly volunteer, Don was honoured for his outstanding contributions to Youth Service at the Canadian Canoe Museum on November 18, 2024.
Nominated and introduced by Rotarian Alan Ingram, the evening’s program notes state:
“Don Barrie, a longtime champion of youth sports and Peterborough’s sports community is honoured with the Youth Services Award for his profound impact on generations of young athletes. Known for his dedicated coaching and as a teacher, Don has inspired hundreds of youths to join lacrosse, leading teams to provincial and national championships and building a legacy of excellence in the sport. His passion for lacrosse and commitment to youth development have made his name synonymous with both in Peterborough. A true pillar of the community, Don’s influence will be felt for years to come.”
Also recognized for their outstanding contributions were: Sandra Whitmore and Gordon Bowley for Community Service, Laurie Heigh for International Service, Dr. Douglas Chenoweth for Vocational Service and Mike Henry for Environmental Service.
Don was joined by his brothers from left to right : Paul, Ian, (Don) and Tim, and their spouses, daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Ian and several members of the PDSHOF board of directors in celebration of this recognition.
The Paul Harris Fellow Recognition Dinner is named after Paul Harris, the original founder of Rotary International in 1905. It is the most prestigious honour bestowed by the club to Rotarians and local individuals for their leadership and service contributions in the areas of Community, International, Vocational, Youth, Environmental and Club Service.
