J. T. (Joe) Stewart

Joe Stewart was a Peterborough native who excelled in many sports, a ‘team player’ with initiative and versatility as his participation in numerous sports at championship level indicates. If there was need for a team, or a league, Joe was often the one who made it all happen. He played on Ontario and Canadian championship clubs in several sports.

Baseball – Sr. B Marines, Ontario champs 1948; Football – Cobourg Galloping Ghosts, Canadian titlists 1946; Volleyball – YMCA team, Ontario Int. A champions 1961; Basketball – Outboard Marine, Ontario champs 1946-47.

Joe started the CGE Volleyball League and Men’s Basketball League; organized the first industrial physical activities at CGE in 1960; introduced slo-pitch softball in Eastern Ontario; and was founding president of the city Horseshoe Club in 1975. He also coached a minor softball team to a title and won a match play golf competition.

Truly a remarkable athlete. He died in 1990.
