M. (Marge) Hawthorne
Marge Hawthorne was an all-round athlete, a serious competitor in softball, bowling, basketball, golf and curling. For 13 seasons, she was an integral cog in a classy Westclox Softball Team which was highly regarded provincially. She played third base and catcher on this team that in 1945 defeated Stratford for the Provincial Championship. She also played two seasons with Burtol Ladies and was a city All-Star in 1955, five years after being named MVP and winner of the Ross Trophy.
She was a member of the 1944 Westclox Girls’ team that won the junior division of the City Ladies Basketball League, the same team winning the senior division in 1945. Marge was eminently successful as a golfer, winning the Hills Trophy at the Peterborough Club in 1965, 1967 and 1970. She won the Austin Memorial Trophy in 1965-66-67-68 and 1970.
Her curling exploits include what is considered a perfect game, played Nov. 21, 1961, when her rink took all eight ends with a score of 12. She was also a quality 5-pin bowler. She died in 1991.
