Condolences to the Family of Former Petes Captain Bill Mahoney

The Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame extend condolences to the family, friends and teammates of Bill Mahoney, former captain of the Peterborough Petes. He died in London, ON on December 16th, 2021 from dementia. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Peterborough native Doreen (Little) and their children Jeff and Karen.

Mr. Mahoney was inducted into the PDSHOF in the athlete category for his tremendous abilities in hockey. As the first Peterborough native to captain the Petes (1958-59), Bill went on to play varsity hockey for the McMaster Marlins, winning MVP honours from the CIAU in its inaugural year. After coaching the Marlins for 15 years, he was named “Coach of the Year” in his final year.

He furthered his hockey career as a coach in the NHL with the Washington Capitals and the Minnesota North Stars, and in the AHL with the Adirondack Red Wings.
