F. G. (Fred) Ash
Fred Ash picked a perfect time to come back to his birthplace, in 1924, to work for Quaker Oats. He was a quality baseball player and he came back from a two year stint in Chicago, just in time to join forces with many members of the 1923 junior team which had won the Ontario championship.
A smooth-fielding, dependable hitter, he helped the 1924 team to their second consecutive provincial title. It was the beginning of a long relationship between Fred Ash and baseball in Peterborough. In 1925, he moved up to the senior Petes and he remained with them until retiring at age 34, in 1937. His early years had been played in the outfield but he finished his playing career as a first baseman.
Looking back, Fred didn’t consider himself a flashy player. “I wasn’t a heavy hitter or particularly exciting, but I got the job done.” he commented.
Indeed he did. He died in 1988.
