Remembering Keith (Monty) Montgomery

The Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame extend condolences to the family of Keith Montgomery.  Monty, a well known Peterborough athlete, passed away at Riverview Manor on Friday, March 17, 2017.  He was 88.

Monty began his junior career with the Lakefield Legionnaires in 1946. In the 1947 season he played with the Peterborough Junior B Oddfellows and in the 1948-49 season he divided his time playing Junior A hockey with Oshawa Generals and the Guleph Biltmores.

From 1949 to 1955 Monty played Senior B hockey with the Peterborough Legion, McGillis Eagles and the T.P.T. Petes. During this time period he was twice runner-up for the Jimmy Drummond Memorial Trophy awarded each season to the most valuable player in Peterborough. In 1955-56 he was an all-star defenceman and team MVP in Intermediate A hockey with Lakefield’s Kingdon Lumber, Lakeshore League Champions. The same year he led the team to the Ontario semi-finals against the Sundridge Beavers. The highlight of Monty’s hockey career came as a member of the 1957-58 Belleville McFarlands who won the coveted Allan Cup, emblematic of Canadian Senior A hockey supremacy.

Keith Montgomery will long be remembered as one of the most spectacular and colourful players of his time. Hockey fans would come to the rink just to watch Monty play.
