With an audience of over 200 family and friends in attendance, the inductees of 2019 were led into the Evinrude Centre banquet hall by piper Reece Muir. Chloe Black (athlete: cycling), John Druce (athlete: hockey), Helen Mortimer, wife of the late Fred Mortimer (athlete: hockey), Heather Richardson (builder/athlete: hockey), Mark Vitarelli (athlete: lacrosse) and Graham Wilkins (athlete: rowing), from their places of honour at the head table, listened to master of ceremonies for the evening, Don Barrie, recount their many sporting accomplishments.
While “honoured and humbled”, each athlete in his or her acceptance speech made it know that they wouldn’t have achieved the success they did without the love and support of family, coaches, teammates and friends. After their competitive success, they have all tried to give back, in some capacity, to their communities to further enhance their respective sports.
In addition to honouring our inductees tonight, Jack’s Hall of Fame golf tournament committee announced its annual donation to the Hall. This year’s tournament, held at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club and attended by 243 golfers, raised $20,000! Brent Delahey made the announcement and the cheque was gratefully accepted by Hall 1st Vice Chair Patricia Bronson. These funds are used to offset operating costs for the Hall, and also to provide annual bursaries to 4 local graduating high school athletes who are pursuing post-secondary education and sports.
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame, a special 18-month calendar was given to each guest at the dinner. Past and present inductees are featured on the pages of the calendar, making it a sought after souvenir.
For further information about each of our inductees, go to the homepage of this website, type the name of the athlete into the “enter search keywords” space, and you will be able to read their detailed biography.
Congratulations to induction dinner chair Sally Graham and her committee, on another very successful evening!
