W. E. (Bill) Meagher

William E. (Bill) Meagher was born in Peterborough in 1880 and lived here all of his 83 years, during which he distinguished himself in football, lacrosse, hockey and baseball.

He was a top linesman with the Orfuns when they won the Canadian Intermediate Championship in 1901.  Meagher also played championship hockey – a stalwart defenceman around the time the Brock Street Arena opened.  He was a valuable point man in lacrosse, playing for the field lacrosse team which won a provincial crown.

In baseball, Bill played second base in games that date back to when they played on the cricket pitch in Ashburnham.  He retired from sports in 1907.

At the time of his death in 1963, Examiner sports editor Cec Perdue wrote:  “If we had a Sports Hall of Fame here, Bill’s name would be in it.”

We have — and it is.
