C. G. E. (Cy) Whatley

Cy was born in England in 1912 and moved to Peterborough at the age of five. He started playing baseball in the local minor leagues, eventually making the Peterborough Seniors of the Central Ontario Baseball League (COBL) where he played for ten years.

He was an outstanding player at all positions but will be best remembered as a catcher with an overpowering throwing arm. Cy was also an accomplished hitter, leading the COBL in batting with a .379 average in 1935. During his career in Peterborough, Cy played in three Ontario Championship Final Series.

Cy excelled in an era when the calibre of baseball and the rivalry between Oshawa, Kingston, Belleville and Peterborough was at its peak. Each city included many highly talented imports from Canada and the USA on their rosters.

Cy was considered as one of Ontario’s best players, extremely colourful and very popular with fans throughout the province.

Cy played as a rugged defenceman in the Peterborough Senior Hockey League and he was also an active curler and golfer.

Cy died while participating in a curling match at Omemee in 1969.
